Strait of Hormuz Closure

The world is now experiencing the greatest sea crisis in the contemporary history. With the second week underway of Operation Epic Fury, the Strait of Hormuz which is the most important energy route to the world has been practically cut off. It is not a regional battle, but the attack on the entire world economy.

The Full Story: Why the Strait Matters.

The Strait of Hormuz is a channel of water that is between the gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. It is widest at the narrowest at only 21 miles, and shipping lanes are only two miles in either direction.

The main geopolitical tool of Iran here has been historically this choke point. This passage is home to about 20 percent of the total oil that is consumed in the world daily. The Iranian military doctrine changed to denial, not deterrence, when the war on February 28, using thousands of sea mines, anti-ship missiles, and swarms of suicide drones to end all commercial traffic.

The Present Situation: the 12th of the Blockade.

The situation is critical as of March 11, 2026. After the decapitation attacks on the Iranian leadership, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval force remnants have implemented a scorched-sea policy.

Naval Gridlock: There are more than 60 tankers that are either dark or anchoring outside the Gulf of Oman and the ships cannot enter or leave.

Military Intervention: The U.S. Fifth fleet, together with a coalition of UK and French Navy is involved in intensive Mine Countermeasures (MCM). Nevertheless, the numbers of smart mines used by Iran have rendered a “Safe Passage Corridor” almost unclearable in the face of fire.

Oil Price Surge: Crude oil prices have shot high above the $180 per barrel mark. According to experts, when the closure continues after another 30 days, we might have up to 250 per barrel, and this will cause a world recession.

Strait of Hormuz Closure

Early 2026 closure has had a direct effect of creating an energy deficit worldwide as oil and gas supplies have reduced by approximately 20. The market, as of March 11, 2026, is in the state of extreme deficit because the market has been taken off of by about 9 million barrels of oil per day (mb/d).

Oil and Gas Supply:

Disruptions in the Present.
Strait of Hormuz Blockade: On February 28, 2026, Iran has declared it has a closed strait which has put almost all maritime traffic to a stop and has put the ships that carry about 20 million barrels of oil a day on hold.

Production Stoppages:

Saudi Arabia : Operations at the massive
Ras Tanura
refinery and terminal is closed by attacks.
Kuwait Iraq: The main producers have started to reduce production since they have limited storage of the botted up crude which cannot be exported.
Qatar: The Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) company has also been shut down by one of the largest exporters in the world due to military assaults on its facilities; this has eliminated one out of 5 global LNG supply.

Hypothesis of the Future: What Will It Be?

Hormuz Factor will shape the coming decade of world policy:
The Pivot Of the Land Bridge: Anticipate a huge, multi-billion investment into overland pipelines via Saudi Arabia and the UAE across the Red Sea, completely avoiding the Strait.
Accelerated Energy Transition: This crisis will ring the death knell of oil dependency in Europe and East Asia and will possibly jumpstart green energy infrastructure by 10-15 years.

The Geopolitical Realignment: In case the U.S. will fail to reopen the Strait during the month, its position as the global trade enforcer will be ruined forever, which will allow the Chinese naval forces to enter the Indian Ocean even more.

Conclusion
It is not a what-if scenario anymore but rather the defining geopolitical event of 2026; Strait of Hormuz Closure . Although the military consequences of this war in Iran are yet to be known, the economic wounds of this embargo will last a lifetime.
